The Mel Joyner Award

Supporting students at the ¾«Æ·ÎÞÂë¹ú²ú×Ô²ú from a ‘widening participation’ background, who are making a contribution to University life

Mel was a much loved and respected member of University staff who sadly passed away in 2018. Mel’s family have launched this award to celebrate Mel’s passion for ¾«Æ·ÎÞÂë¹ú²ú×Ô²ú and its inspiring and passionate students.
 

Eligibility

The Mel Joyner award will support students at the ¾«Æ·ÎÞÂë¹ú²ú×Ô²ú who are underrepresented in higher education. 
To be eligible you must show how you are making a contribution to University Life. This could be through a society, a local community project or by bringing people together. Students can apply themselves or be nominated by a staff member or fellow student. The award will be in the region of £500.

Submit your statement (or nomination statement), maximum 400 words, by emailing the application form to giving@plymouth.ac.uk. Please fill out your name (or nominee’s name), course and contact details. The statement should address how you or your nominee meet the criteria and are making a contribution to University life.
Applications opened: Tuesday 1 April 2025
Deadline for applications was: Friday 9 May 2025
Students who are underrepresented in higher education include those: 
  • from low-income backgrounds;
  • from areas where participation in higher education is low;
  • who are the first in their generation to consider higher education;
  • who attend schools and colleges where performance is below the national average;
  • who are care experienced;
  • who live with a disability;
  • who are young carers;
  • estranged from their families;
  • from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds;
  • from military families;
  • from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller communities;
  • who are refugees or asylum seekers.
