The meaning of 'history' as an academic discipline; historiography; methods and approaches; theories of historical explanation; application of theory to case studies; the range of historical evidence and the strengths and limitations of each type; using historical evidence to test the validity of interpretations.

Archaeological Practice
This module reveals how and why archaeologists discover sites and gather archaeological information and material. Practical elements such as field walking, geophysics, surveying and excavation are included when opportunities arise.

Archaeology, Ritual and Society
This chronological module explores the archaeology of religion and ritual as it applies to society from prehistoric periods to the present day, focusing principally on the Southwest of England, but utilising key case studies from elsewhere to inform knowledge and practice when necessary.

This module provides an introduction to heritage and heritage assets and their significance, the role of stakeholders, heritage bodies and initiatives, legislation and planning; the importance of ethical issues; how people interact with heritage including accessibility, education, community, wellbeing, identity; and the ways in which heritage can be interpreted, depicted and disseminated.

This thematic module explores the ways in which archaeologists endeavour to understand, interpret, explain and reconstruct the past. The module focuses on human society exploring such themes as mobility, migration, conflict, identity, gender, status, trade and economy.

This module explores the evidence for one or more major historical controversies, and how and why historians have interpreted this evidence in different ways.

Historical Reputations
This module is concerned with the critical analysis of the reputations of famous historical figures, explored through the close scrutiny of contemporary sources and subsequent histories. The module is focused on the different ways in which these figures have been interpreted by their advocates and critics, and the reasons for these differences.

Heritage Projects focuses on the interpretation and dissemination of ‘heritage’ and to provide students with the skills to make their own contribution to this record by undertaking their own practical heritage projects.

Heritage Investigation
The dissertation style Heritage Investigation is a research-based module on a theme, issue or debate relating to the heritage industry. Students will identify an appropriate area for investigation, undertake independent research, classify, analyse and critically evaluate the results of this research and arrive at an interpretation on the basis of this analysis.
